Date Of Birth: August 16, 1915
Date Of Death: October 29, 2006
Grace Kathern Decker Hignite Bass, 91, died in Indianapolis Sunday October 29th. She was born in a small town in Kentucky and never lost her love for the outdoors and fishing and camping with her family and their families. She is the last of seven children borne to Sally and Polis Decker. She and her late husband were volunteers at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC for over forty years. Always active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary she was a Past President of Hoosier Post 624 and Lawrence Post 261 Ladies Auxiliaries, Past President, 11th District Ladies Auxiliary, past Grand President of the Military Order of the Cooties, Past 7th Supreme President of the MOCA and Past Hoosier #1 MOCA Auxiliary President. Her care and concern for the patients in our veterans hospitals and nursing home was always one of her great loves and passion. She was an avid Scrabble player as all her children and grandchildren have learned well. She loved playing penny ante poker, solitaire or any card game with anyone if it made him or her happy and would provide a small amount of happiness in their world. Crossword puzzle master number one, there wasn’t one she couldn’t finish in her prime and none she wouldn’t tackle. Her smile, her laugh, her singing (when you could talk her into it), her ever-sharp wit and her straight to the point way of looking at life, will be missed by all her family. Both her husbands, Raymond Hignite and Charles A. "Pop" Bass, two sons Douglas and Billy, preceded her in death. She leaves behind her children, Dennis and Richard Hignite, Sandra White, Charles A. "Bud" Bass; she had 25 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind nephews, nieces, cousins, and countless friends from Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sisters from the Ladies Auxiliaries. She will be laid to rest next to her very special veteran "Pop" in Washington Park East.

We mourn the loss of Aunt Grace who was the last of our aunts & uncles. We are now the older generation & must set examples for those who follow our footsteps. We will miss visiting with her when we come to Indianapolis. Her mind continued to be sharp-as-a-tack in spite of her aging years. Hopefully we will all live to see our minds as sharp & live a long, happy life. May God bless Dennis, Dick, Buddy, & Sandy, as well as their children & grandchildren; and all the extended family & numerous friends.

As one of the many grandchildren, I have so many memories of Grace. However, it is not one memory I will forever hold of Grandma with me. It is the love she showed me. No matter how far away I lived or how long between visits, she always made me feel loved and remembered. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family and friends.

I am sorry I could not make it to the services – my son is in VA Hospital having undergone a failed surgery and I will be enroute to check up on him.
Please accept my deepest sympathies and condolences for the loss of such a great lady. I am sure that she is resting now after her long and greatful service to our veterans. God is now with her.
